- OPCODE SHOWS 3 NEW MUSIC PRODUCTS AT SAN FRANCISCO MACWORLD EXPO
-
- SAN FRANCISCO MACWORLD, January 10, 1991 — Opcode Systems, Inc. showed a
- variety of new products for the Macintosh multimedia market: MAX, a real-time
- interactive programming environment; The MIDI Translator, a high-quality,
- low-cost MIDI interface; and The Book of MIDI, an interactive HyperCard stack
- that teaches the user about MIDI, music, computers, and synthesizers. MIDI
- (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) is the standard communications protocol
- between synthesizers, computers, and a variety of other electronic instruments
- and processors.
-
-
- Opcode announces that MAX, previously only available to developers, is now
- available through dealers. MAX is a graphic programming environment in which
- complex applications can be built by linking together simple modules. Because
- of MAX’s unique ability to construct applications that process data in
- real-time, its environment is perfect for the design of applications using
- MIDI, music, video, digital audio, animation, and other multimedia systems.
- MAX was originally conceived by Miller Puckette at IRCAM, the Computer Music
- Research Center in Paris. The user interface has been further developed by
- David Zicarelli for Opcode. The program was originally intended to control
- music and audio hardware, but it is not “dedicated” to music, and is flexible
- enough to support a wide range of potential applications. MAX’s unique ability
- to run music and graphic events with precise timing outpowers all existing
- multimedia software.
-
-
- The Book of MIDI provides an interactive approach to learning, allowing the
- user to learn by watching, listening, and playing. It lets the user hear
- digitized samples of synthesizer sounds and can emulate the functions of
- Opcode’s EZ Vision sequencer using animation. In addition to numerous animated
- movies, The Book of MIDI contains the MIDI Game and several interactive MIDI
- experiments that let the user learn by experience, not just by reading. The
- Book of MIDI requires no additional hardware and thus promises to expose MIDI
- to a wide range of Macintosh users.
-
-
- The MIDI Translator interface provides the means to let MIDI instruments and
- the Macintosh “talk” to each other. The user simply connects the interface to
- either the printer or modem port on the Macintosh and then connects one or more
- MIDI instruments to the interface. One can then use software to perform a huge
- variety of tasks with MIDI such as creating, recording, and editing music with
- a sequencer, editing and storing synthesizer sounds, or adding MIDI music to
- multimedia presentations or educational software, among many others. The MIDI
- Translator requires no power supply and is therefore extremely simple to set
- up. The MIDI Translator’s simplicity, self-contained and sturdy design, and
- low cost make it the ideal entry-level MIDI interface.
